Embracing innovation and change: transforming the procurement function

Over the last year, the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) Strategic Procurement and Material Management Division (SPMMD) has experienced a substantial transformation. Recognizing a shift in the procurement function across the Government of Canada, from transactional contracting toward strategic procurement, they have been making a great effort to get ready for the future. Beyond building their own capacity to deliver exceptional service to the CBSA and fostering a culture of continuous learning, the team has been proactively reaching out across the Government of Canada to help build a stronger federal procurement community. In June 2016, the SPMMD won the team category of the Canadian Institute of Procurement and Material Management Community Builder Award, in recognition of their exceptional contribution to actively work to build up the procurement and/or materiel management communities. Jessica Sultan, Director of the SPMMD, within our Comptrollership Branch, has won awards and published three articles related to innovation and change required in order for procurement to become strategic, collaborative and professional across the Government of Canada. Through this initiative, the procurement function is increasingly viewed as an effective business enabler in support of larger government objectives. Here's one of Jessica's articles:  Canadian Government Executive (English only)
