The CBSA strives to be an inclusive working environment that values respect and diversity, as well as equal access to jobs and promotional opportunities for women, indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.
In support of this, our recruitment activities strive to build a workforce that is representative of the people we serve.
Over the last year, we have undertaken a number of initiatives to support and promote diversity at the CBSA, including:
- continuing the operation of the Indigenous Advisory Circle, which provides advice and guidance on indigenous recruitment, retention, training and advancement;
- refreshing Indigenous awareness training for border service officer recruits. CBSA employees who work at the Cornwall Port of Entry (POE) also take a two-day course that was co-developed by the Agency and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne to enhance relationships between the CBSA and the Indigenous people of Akwesasne;
- ensuring all employees complete the Diversity and Race Relations, and Creating a Respectful Workplace online courseware, offered by the Canada School of Public Service;
- participating in the Young Women in Public Safety Initiative and the Indigenous Youth Summer Employment Opportunity Program, under which CBSA hired the most indigenous students among 12 participating departments; and
- creating new visible minority and LGBTQ+ advisory committees.
These initiatives help us minimize and remove barriers that could otherwise lay in the way of talented individuals who aspire to serve Canadians from doing just that.
It’s our goal to continue building the healthiest, most inclusive workplace culture possible to grow our reputation as an employer of choice to attract the skilled and dedicated individuals we need to continue supporting a safer and more prosperous Canada.
And in this pursuit, diversity is undoubtedly our strength.
